Like most amateur wrestling federations, BYW began in 2000 with just a few high school
friends who got the idea of starting their own backyard wrestling league. After fooling
around on a trampoline in the backyard and wrestling each other, they decided to create
characters, a better wrestling ring, and to start filming it. The first few matches were a
success and very entertaining, so more wrestlers were recruited. As BYW grew, they spent
time collecting materials needed for wrestling, such as bed mattresses, which were used for
the bottom of the ring. Abandoned old mattresses are surprisingly easy to find in the
country. Trash cans, shopping carts, and street signs were also collected. (collection
methods for those items remain a secret)

By the King of the Ring tournament and with the new recruits, BYW reached a new level by
becoming more athletic, tactical, and extreme. Alliances were formed and the best
contenders rose to the top. BYW was then kicked out of their first yard, but luckily they
found another yard to call home. In the new yard, creativity flowed with even more
characters joining and unique matchups taking place. By that time, the fame of Back Yard
Wrestling spread. Neighborhood kids showed up to watch the matches. Many people in high
school wanted to participate as well. In all, there were 25 characters (from 21 people). After
a last and final day of wrestling in the fall of 2000, BYW disappeared as all the wrestlers
went their separate ways. Luckily, no one was ever seriously hurt.

What set BYW apart from other federations was their athletic ability (some of them were
actual wrestlers and they all played real sports in high school), their ability to act, their
creativity, and having exciting play by play commentary. For most of the wrestlers it was
just a fun after school activity and should be seen as a moment in time.
